Our helpful top tips for keeping your washing machine smelling fresh all day long
1. Clean the detergent drawer
Remove the drawer and rinse away detergent and fabric-softener residue. Use an old toothbrush to reach corners and remove stubborn build-up.
Quick tip: Leave the drawer slightly open after each wash so it can dry out.
2. Wipe the door seal
Dirt, lint and moisture can collect inside the rubber seal.
Pull back the folds gently and wipe them with a clean, damp cloth.
Quick tip: Give the seal a quick wipe after washing to help prevent mould and musty smells.
3. Clean the drum
Run your machine's drum cleaning or maintenance programme when recommended. If your machine doesn't have one, follow the cleaning instructions in your appliance manual.
Remember: Never mix cleaning products, particularly bleach and acidic cleaners such as vinegar.
4. Check the filter
The filter catches coins, lint, hair and other debris. A blocked filter can affect drainage and contribute to unpleasant smells.
Check your manual for the filter's location and cleaning instructions, and remember to switch off the machine first.
5. Let it breathe
When a wash finishes, remove your clothes and leave the door open for a while.
Allowing the drum to dry helps prevent damp, musty smells.
6. Use the right amount of detergent
More detergent doesn't mean cleaner clothes. Too much can leave residue inside the machine.
Follow the detergent manufacturer's recommended dosage and adjust for load size and water hardness where appropriate.
7. Don't overload
Give clothes enough room to move freely around the drum. Overloading can affect washing performance and put additional strain on the machine.
